In the late 1940s, a new plastic called Lucite was introduced. Lucite purses were produced by noted designers such as Rialto, Llewellyn, Patricia of Miami, Wilardy, Miami Handbags, and Myles Originals though most are not signed.
During the prosperous years that followed the end of the 2nd World War, the boom years to be precise, Lucite was the rave. From interior and industrial design where plastics were used for furniture and geometric forms, to fashion and style where designers created fashion accessories like jewellery, handbags, clutch bags, and purses using this strong and durable thermoplastic.

Vintage Lucite is sturdy and was a much better than Bakelite, an earlier plastic of the 1920s used in radios and jewellery.
This darling lipstick red bag with an etched lid, little feet, brass hardware and a curved lucite handle is a fabulous little splash of red and holds just enough including an iPhone! Whoddathunk?
